History

With roots tracing all the way back to 1712, Spanish Fort has a rich history. During the American Revolutionary War, the Spanish took Mobile and the surrounding areas in the Battle of Charlotte, and a Spanish military fort was built in 1780 on the site of that old French trading post. As a result, the fitting name “Spanish Fort” was given to the area. You can find that “original trading post” location, even today, at the southeast corner of the intersection of U.S. Highways 98 and 31. What a unique piece of history right in town!

A while later, during the Civil War, Spanish Fort was heavily fortified as a defense for the Mobile area. The fort fell on April 8, 1865, shortly before the end of the Civil war. Interestingly, the local population dropped after the Civil War and the area stayed mostly undeveloped until the 1970s. However, throughout the 70s and 80s, the “City of Spirt”, experienced substantial growth, leading to it’s incorporation in 1993. Since then, Spanish Fort has maintained it’s ‘small town charm’, and is a wonderful place to call home!

Spanish Fort Today

Today, Spanish Fort is an excellent community that continues to grow every year. The area boasts great shopping, places like the Eastern Shore Centre and Spanish Fort Town Center are wonderful spots to spend the afternoon. In addition, Spanish Fort offers a strong public school system, making it a targeted choice for families seeking excellence in academics. We are proud that Spanish Fort High School was recently named one of the Top 20 high schools in the state of Alabama by U.S. News & World Report.

Furthermore, Spanish Fort prides itself on concern for the environment. This beautiful gem overlooks Mobile Bay, and that beauty has been carefully protected throughout its history. There are many opportunities to enjoy the local scenery, such as at Meaher State Park and Historic Blakely State Park.

Are You Building in Spanish Fort?

There are many good reasons to build in the “City of Spirit”. For example, it’s proximity to I-10 makes it a very convenient place to live, only a 30 minute drive from both Mobile and Pensacola. In addition, it’s location north of I-10 provides residents a distinct cost of living advantage over those who reside south of the Interstate because insurance rates typically drop for those residing north of I-10. Without a doubt, more and more people are investing in the area, driving economic growth in Spanish Fort. If you are looking for a place to build, Spanish Fort shines in practical ways and offers lots of fun to local residents.
