History

Have you ever wondered where Orange Beach got its name? In the late 1800s, forestland was becoming more and more scarce in the area. As a result, local residents began planting orange groves at the turn of the 20th century to replace the shrinking forests. Thus, the citrus industry was a prominent part of the local economy until 1926. This historical fact is what contributed to the city’s unique name, Orange Beach.

The Gulf State Park opened in the summer of 1939, and tourism became the lead source of revenue for the local economy. Alabama paved the first road to Orange Beach in 1947. After that, the next 30 years brought massive upgrades to local infrastructure, which continue today. For example, one of these projects is the Gulf State Park Pier, the largest on the Gulf Coast. The first iteration was an 825-foot-long structure built in 1968.  Today, the concrete pier, now 1,544 feet long, continues to receive beautiful updates. These updates include Ipe decking, turtle-friendly lighting, and an observation deck with an elevator. Thoughtful touches like these make Orange Beach a wonderful place to live.

Orange Beach Today

Today, the city of Orange Beach is known for its successful charter fishing, beautiful sand beaches and plentiful entertainment. Local marinas such as The Wharf and the Orange Beach Marina have many offerings. The Wharf is home to the second-tallest Ferris Wheel in the Southeast. There are abundant high-end shopping centers and concert venues, and the local art scene is bustling with talent and many festivals. The area is also known for its excellent culinary scene, boasting many restaurants that have been established for over 50 years. Fresh, local seafood takes centerstage.

Orange Beach is also home to many beautiful neighborhoods, including those on Ono Island. Originally bought in 1945 for just $3,000, this private island community is now home to almost 1000 stunning custom houses. Notably, it has its very own fire dept. and community centers. If you’re looking to build a quality waterfront home, your forever home or just your winter escape remodel, Orange Beach is an excellent place to do it!
