History

Magnolia Springs, located at the headwaters of the Magnolia River, was originally called River de Lin, Cataract Creek, or River del Salto by local residents. The origins of the community date back to the 1700s with the plantations of French and British settlers lining Magnolia River and Weeks Bay. The town of Magnolia Springs as we know it developed from a Spanish land grant in the year 1800.  By the end of the Civil War, it became a primary destination for families from the north. They built homes, inns, and businesses along the river’s edge. They were joined by native Alabamians and transplants from other Southern location. As a result, a rich cultural melting pot was created. Cattle, fishing, and brick making became the main industries. Later, the largest enterprise in the area was turpentine distillation. These stills were burned by their owners in 1865 to prevent them from being captured by the Union.

In decades past, the river was the “highway” for all commerce and communication. The steamers, sailboats and paddle wheelers connected the river’s residents with the outside world. At the turn of the century, the water emanating from the natural springs along both sides of the river was declared “the purest in the world” by several chemical companies in Chicago.

Magnolia Springs Today

Magnolia Springs is known for it’s peaceful vibe and lush greenery. A majestic canopy of giant oak trees lines the streets as well as a variety of camellias, (the state flower). In spring, the byways of Magnolia Springs become a luxuriant bouquet of azalea, wisteria, dogwood, and giant magnolia tree blossoms. Quaint boathouses grace each shore, water birds swoop and dive, and the river banks are still lush with wildlife and greenery. Magnolia Springs is also one of the only towns in the entire nation that still has mail deilvered by boat on the Magnolia River.

Local businesses are known for friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. For example, the historic Magnolia Springs Bed & Breakfast is a great local gem, 5 cozy rooms tucked away in a grove of majestic oak trees. It still retains its original 1897 stained glass and woodwork. Another staple in the Magnolia Springs community is Jesse’s Restaurant. Known for delicious steaks and fresh caught fish, it’s a wonderful place to eat. Additionally, many enjoy kayaking or canoing on the serene Magnolia River, gliding underneath the vibrant trees. Indeed, there is surely plenty to do in this beautiful town!
