History
It’s hard to believe that at one time, Gulf Shores was just a small rural fishing community on the Gulf Coast. It also was home to one of the deciding battles of the civil war, on the Fort Morgan, but for decades, it was almost unknown. That all started to change in the late 1930s with the opening of the Gulf State park and the Intracoastal Waterway. These two monumental factors began drawing the attention of people across the country. Before long, in 1958, the Town of Gulf Shores was established. In the decade to follow, visitors and tourists helped the town thrive during summer months. 1971 marked the first National Shrimp Festival, which has been a highlight of Gulf Shores for over 5o years now!
Gulf Shores Today
Today, Gulf Shores is a destination for many, yet a relatively hidden gem. It is well-located between major hubs such as New Orleans and Pensacola but far enough away to maintain pristine beaches and small town charm. The beaches are filled with soft white sand, a large variety of birds, and relatively few people, especially on the Fort Morgan peninsula. Options for dining and family entertainment abound, and the area supports over 15 golf courses. Fishing, watersports, and ecotourism are a major draw too. The local economy is growing at a record rate, and the crime rate and cost of living is lower than the national and even state average. You can understand why many have have chosen to call Gulf Shores their home.
