History
Fairhope has a rich and unique history, tracing all the way back to the 19th century. In 1894 a group of reformers chose the Eastern Shore to be the home for their new utopian colony that would have vastly different tax and social laws. They concluded that these new laws would give them a “fair hope” of succeeding. Thus, the new “Single Tax Colony of Fairhope” was established. This unique proposition attracted creative and adventurous residents from around the country. In time, changes were made to the single tax laws due to a lack of funds. This allowed others to join the growing colony. In 1908, it became the Town of Fairhope with around 500 inhabitants. Although the tax laws didn’t last much longer, the spirit of creativity and industriousness continued to grow in Fairhope.
During the war years, the population boomed. Workers from nearby Mobile helped grow the economy rapidly. In the decades to follow, Fairhope became a retreat for artists, writers, actors and craftsmen. One lasting success of the original colony was the many public parks, and the construction of the iconic Fairhope Pier. To this day, the many beachfront parks along the bluff are a cornerstone of local living. The unique culture and architcture place Fairhope on the map as a must-see destination on the Gulf Coast.
Fairhope Today
Today, Fairhope holds up to its reputation as a peaceful, romantic and artistic haven on the Gulf Coast. There is certainly not a shortage of things to do! Fairhope is well known for its iconic pier. Many generations throughout history have enjoyed beautiful sunsets from the nearby beach, a family picnic under the shade of a tree, or simply smelling the rose garden that adorns the pier. Just a short walk away is downtown Fairhope, home to countless boutiques and locally owned stores. While shopping, you can stop at one of the family-owned restaurants in downtown for a delicious meal.
Fairhope is home to many beautiful works of art. Stop by the Eastern Shore Art Center to see a stunning exhibit on display. Or, take a stroll through Fairhope’s French Quarter to admire the architecture, history and culture found there. In the evening, many enjoy a local band playing at a nearby restaurant, only adding to the storybook charm of Fairhope.
