History

In the late 1800s, Daphne became the destination for many European immigrants searching for peaceful farmland and Italian immigrants in particular took a liking to this area on the Eastern Shore. This consequently contributed to a rich variety of wines, pastas and sauces that can still be found today. In 1874, William Howard became the postmaster of this small town. His wife coined the name Daphne, and in 1927, the town of Daphne was incorporated!

Daphne is known as the Jubilee City, this is because it is home to a rare phenomenon called a Jubilee. Happening only a few times a year during a summer night, a Jubilee is a spectacular sight! It occurs due to a very special set of circumstances aligning, involving the wind, temperature, tides and the oxygen content of the water. During a Jubilee, sea creatures can no longer carry out normal activities. They move very slowly and are less elusive to fisherman, even coming up onto shore! Excited residents can catch hundreds of shrimp, crab, and flounder by hand. There are only 2 places on the planet that have such intense Jubilees: Mobile Bay and Tokyo Bay in Japan.

Daphne Today

The City of Daphne is the largest town in Baldwin County and is one of the fastest growing areas in the nation. Home to a population of about 30,000 and located on the eastern shoreline of Mobile Bay just off I-10, Daphne is just 11 miles east of Mobile.

In town, there are many highly-ranked choices for schooling. There are also relatively low crime rates, (Just an 1/8th of national or state) so you and your family can feel safe.

Daphne itself is situated on a high bluff with elevations ranging from sea level to 120 feet, offering excellent views of the bay. Panoramic sunrises and sunsets make the causeway and bridge commute beautiful! The climate is enviable with an average annual temperature of 65.4 degrees (average in January is 41.1 degrees and July is 80.5 degrees) and average rainfall of 67 inches per year. Summers are no doubt long and hot, but the heat is tempered by breezes from Mobile Bay and the Gulf, and supplemented by cool shade from the luxuriant oaks characteristic of this area. Winters are short and very mild, and spring and autumn offer colorful outdoor scenery. There is an abundance of parks and trails to explore, and a multitude of gardens and public flower beds flourishing on every corner!
